LeBron James joins Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to play with the Miami Heat

LeBron James has decided to join his Team USA and fellow 2003 NBA draftees, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, down in South Beach to play with the Miami Heat. The trio of perennial NBA All-Stars will look to win what only Wade has, an NBA title ring, for the next five years at the very least. James, after much speculation that had him going to the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, and staying with the Cleveland Cavaliers, made his choice known on ESPN Thursday night in a program called, The Decision. It’s generally thought that the execution of LeBron’s selection was poor in taste as it just fed more into the hype that most people were already sick of anyway. However, there is no questioning LeBron’s appeal and general curiosity about where he would play. Rest easy, it’s the Heat.

Former Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott’s legacy lives on

Marge Schott was a woman who made history. She was the first woman to ever buy a Major League Baseball franchise when she purchased controlling interest in the Cincinnati Reds on December 21, 1984. Throughout her 15-year long tenure, she was a public face of the franchise for reasons good and bad. She was great with kids, signed autographs and kept tickets low, but also didn’t put much money back into the team, preferring instead to keep contracts low and deriding players who didn’t earn their keep.

Evgeni Nabokov leaves the San Jose Sharks and returns to Mother Russia

The Russians got another one back. Evgeni Nabokov, the now former goaltender of the San Jose Sharks is going back to his homeland to play for SKA St. Petersburg in the Continental Hockey League. His departure does not hurt the Sharks at all, as they had not offered him a new contract after his former one expired at the end of the 2009-10 NHL season, but it does hurt hockey on the whole, as the KHL has one another small battle in the war for skilled players.

Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder staying together five additional years

Lost amidst the wave of NBA free agency that has been drowning NBA news sites/blogs, Kevin Durant extended his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, re-upping for five more additional years. It is reported to be for five years and $85 million, a bargain considering the potential and upside that Durant still possesses as a 21-year-old that just led the NBA in scoring with a 30.1 PPG average. The Thunder finished with 50 wins last season and made the postseason for the first time as the Thunder (formerly being the Seattle SuperSonics) and are on an upward trajectory for which a huge part of it has been because of Durant.

Chris Bosh joins the Miami Heat with fellow free agent Dwyane Wade

Unrestricted free agents, and two of the Big Three that includes LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade have decided which team they will be playing for starting next season - the Miami Heat - and most importantly, they’ll be doing it together. Bosh will be joining a new team with his friend and Team USA teammate, Wade, who will be re-joining the team that drafted him in 2003 as the fifth overall pick, while Bosh was drafted fourth overall by the Toronto Raptors. The aforementioned James was selected first overall in the same draft. The possibility still exists for LeBron to join Bosh and Wade in Miami, an answer that will be made known on July 8th at 9PM ET on ESPN.

Willis takes unwanted break from baseball

It seems nobody wants Dontrelle Willis. On July 4, the 2003 NL Rookie of the Year was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks. It was the second time this season he’s found himself unwanted, as his first DFA of the season came from the Tigers on May 30 and traded to Arizona a couple of days later. Willis once again finds himself in no man’s land hoping somebody else across the baseball landscape will show interest in his arm, if nothing else.

Colorado’s Gonzalez having all-star season without all-star nod

When looking at some of the players of tomorrow, Colorado’s Carlos Gonzalez is definitely one to watch. The man known as CarGo is one of the five players subject to fan voting as part of the National League’s All-Star Final Vote, along with Padres closer Heath Bell, Reds first baseman Joey Votto, Braves lefty Billy Wagner and Nationals third bagger Ryan Zimmerman. The Rockies’ center fielder is hoping to head to his first Midsummer Classic.

Despite that, his name wasn’t found on the list of 2010 National League All-Stars. Instead, he’s on the short list for the final vote this week and fans can select him to the final spot on the NL roster, but he’s up against some strong competition.

As America celebrates its Independence Day today, another famous birthday is being honored today. Owner of the New York Yankees George Steinbrenner is 80 years old today and while he is no longer in the driving seat, his imprint can be seen and felt all over the Yankees brand and likely will continue to do so for many years to come. The Texas Rangers are making headlines this season, and closer-turned-starter C.J. Wilson is no small part of that. While his team sits atop the American League West with a three-and-a-half game lead over the Angels – the largest lead of any division in baseball – Wilson has settled into the starting rotation nicely after being Texas’ ninth-inning man for the last three years. With half the season come and gone, the team will now look to him to further solidify their hold in the AL West as they try to make the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
